USAfrica, July 24, 2012: The President of the west African country of Ghana, John Evans Atta Mills, died a few hours ago at a military hospital in Accra on Tuesday July 24, 2012.
“It is with a heavy heart that we announce the sudden and untimely death of the president of the republic of Ghana”, were the mournful words of the Chief of Staff at the Ghana Presidency Henry Martey Newman to a concerned nation.
He said that President Mills died at 37 Military Hospital in Accra after being rushed to the special ward as his ill-health deteriorated. Reportedly, he was suffering from throat cancer. A few hours earlier, he informed the Ghana parliament he was traveling to Nigeria.
Vice President John Dramani Mahama is taking over the powers of the presidency, as constitutionally required.
Mills received treatment, privately, a few weeks ago in the U.S, and returned on June 25, 2012.
Mills, who is 68 years old, was inaugurated in January 2009; and hosted U.S President Barack Obama and his family in 2011 in Ghana. The reports of the visit are here on USAfricaonline.com.
