USAfrica: Why Ghana’s President said ‘No’ to U.S., France, Nigeria on military intervention in...

I understand President Mills' position as: first, reflecting that west African country's practical and immediate interests. Ghana is a neighbor of Ivory Coast's and has business interests in the country. Second, Ghana is likely to bear the brunt of a chaotic Ivory Coast, from refugees moving into Ghana. Ivory Coast has 19million citizens with 60 ethnic groups, a mix of Christians and Muslims; the Baoule is the largest sub-group, the Senoufou, the Mande/Dioula, the Krou, the Yacouba, the Akan (some of who draw their links from Ghana).

USAfrica: The ugly truths of Famine and Genocide in Somalia. By Ben Barber

Islamist militant groups such as the Shabab that control vast areas of Somalia have been killing aid workers and blocking hungry Somalis from either receiving donated food or escaping to Kenya where they could be fed with international aid. Some 500,000 children are at risk of death in the coming weeks. The death of every person due to denial of aid and to denial of the right to flee from famine is the equivalent of genocide..... U.S. officials simply dragged their feet — to our undying shame — claiming they needed to repaint armored cars from desert camouflage to jungle green. Might as well have painted them black for hearses.

Africa’s new sets of complex challenges dissected at Achebe 2012 Colloquium

In effect, governments like Egypt, Libya and Tunisia, to name a few, are faced with the daunting task of securing a democratic state, foreign to their current political DNA developed from decades of dictatorship. The Central and Eastern regions are undergoing an incredible time of turmoil and instability; to add, South Sudan, as recent as July 9th 2011, celebrated its new national identity and independence from Sudan. West Africa is yet to find an answer to the evolving proliferation and sophistication of terrorism. Africa’s Southern Region still wrestles with matters of race, politics, economic problems, AIDS, housing scarcity and peace building.
