EXPLOSIVE: 33 civilians killed by Nigerian soldiers in Boko-Haram torn city of Maiduguri

A local Islamic leader in Maiduguri informed USAfrica and USAfricaonline.com in the summer of 2012 that a major problem which the Nigerian government is facing in their fight against the radical Islamic sect Boko Haram in and around Maiduguri is that "the Nigerian army and the police engage, sometimes, in sweeping attacks on not only the Boko Haram but on some innocent civilians. They lose the trust of the population."

Nigerians flee embattled city after deadly Islamists’ attacks, killings

"Hundreds of residents, especially those living on the outskirts of the city, which have been worst hit by the attacks, are fleeing with their belongings," he said. "Those of them with personal cars are stuffing personal belongings into their vehicles and heading out of the city, while others are taking buses and taxis at the garage and along the main road, heading south," he said.

Why President Jonathan’s retention of Adefuye as Nigeria’s Ambassador to USA exposes poor judgment....

With an almost complete failure to deal with Boko Haram, resurgent threats of militancy in the Niger Delta, broadening and unnerving sagas of monumental corruption over the fuel subsidy regime, and many more unnatural disasters that Nigeria faces today, it is most unfortunate that the President of Nigeria should shy away from leading the nation. President Jonathan seems to believe that he could preserve his administration by doing as little as possible. Leaving Adefuye in office is just a crystal example of the President choosing to do nothing and, by implication, choosing not to lead at a time that leadership is so critically needed.
