Madonna in Malawi to launch
$15mn school for girls….
The 51-year-old “Queen of Pop” is building a girls’ school in the impoverished southern African nation, similar in concept to the school that Oprah Winfrey built in South Africa.
The pop icon Madonna, who has been involved in adoption controversies in the country, arrived in the southern African country of Malawi accompanied by her four children- two adopted and two biological children- in the late afternoon hours of Sunday.
Madonna adopted David Banda, 4, and Chifundo “Mercy” James, 3, from Malawi, and Lourdes, 13, and Rocco, 9, are her two biological children.
The Associated Press reports that the singer is expected to preside over the groundbreaking ceremony of her Raising Malawi girls’ Academy later on Monday.
Madonna is expected to lay a foundation stone of the school she is building for poor girls in the country’s capital on Tuesday October 27, 2009.
The a US$15million girls’ school is being built on the outskirts of the nation’s capital Lilongwe and is similar to the school launched by talk show host Oprah in South Africa, AP reports.
On her charity’s Web site, the multi-Grammy Award-winning singer said the school will focus on empowering women to become leaders.
“Our goal is to teach them to challenge themselves, serve their local communities and develop their country,” she said. ” … Research proves that young girls throughout the developing world are often left without opportunities to receive a comprehensive education.”
According to local sources Madonna will also meet Malawian President Dr Bingu Wa Mutharika and visit orphanages her charity supports.
Committed to the nation Madonna is committed to help disadvantaged children in the impoverished southern African state Malawi which has one of the highest rates of HIV/AIDS in the world.
AIDS and other diseases have orphaned more than one million children in Malawi. According to the United Nations’ estimates, 18 million African children will have lost a parent to this highly infectious disease by 2010.
She started the charity “Raising Malawi” in 2006 to feed, educate and provide medical aid to orphan Malawian children.
She made a documentary, “I Am Because We Are,” to highlight poverty, AIDS and other diseases devastating children in the nation of about 13 million.
She is tipped to be awarded for her charity work in the country.
About the sultry beauty The hot and sultry beauty is the single mother of four children. She has two biological children- son Rocco John Ritchie with her former hubby Guy Ritchie, and daughter Lourdes, fathered by her personal trainer, Carlos Leon. She adopted David Banda along with Ritchie from Malawi in 2006, and adopted Mercy earlier this year.
On Dec. 22, 2000, Madonna married the 40-year-old British director Guy Ritchie, whom she had met in 1999 through mutual friends, Sting and his wife Trudie Styler. Their divorce was finalized in November last. ref:wire report.
