Jan. 13, 2010: Gabon clinches a wonderful 1-0 victory against one of the tournament favorite Cameroon this afternoon in the African Nations Cup. There were 15,000 fans of both teams present at the Nossa Senhora do Monte stadium in the first Group D game. In this year’s African Nations Cup, under-rated teams have performed much better than the top-rated teams. Malawi already upset one of the strong team Algeria by three goals to nil.
Daniel Cousin scored the only goal of the game in the 17th minute for Gabon. Gabon’s captain Daniel Cousin is also a striker for the Hull City in English Premier League. He took advantage of defensive mix-up to score the decisive goal. Gabon secured only their second ever African Nations Cup victory through his effort. However, Cameroon’s defence really looks miserable at times when the Black Panthers move forward.
Geremi’s long-range free-kick seemed to trouble Gabon’s goal-keeper Didier Ovono but he managed to punch it away. Achille Emana missed so many chances in the match. Samuel Eto’o looked stiff as his only decent shot on the goal was deflected wide. Didier Ovono made some great saves in the match to deny an equalizer for the Cameroon. He made a brilliant save to keep Geremi’s deflected free-kick away from the goal in the final minute of normal time.
