The twists of the trial and cross-examination of one of the world’s most popular super models Naomi Campbell are revealing more controversial and sensational details. A few hours ago, Naomi’s former business agent told a war crimes court the fashion model flirted with disgraced, former President of Liberia Charles Taylor at a 1997 dinner and he arranged to send her a gift of uncut diamonds.
Carole White’s testimony contradicts the British model’s statements at the Sierra Leone Special Tribunal. The AP notes that Campbell downplayed her contact with Taylor, saying she received an unexpected gift of “dirty looking” pebbles the night after the dinner. She told judges Friday she did not initially realize they were diamonds or who sent them.
Actress Mia Farrow also told the tribunal that Campbell knew about the fact the diamonds were from Taylor.
A timeline of quotes from the trial include the following:
Naomi Campbell, August 5, 2010: ‘At breakfast, I told Miss Farrow and Miss White what had happened and they said, “It must have been from Charles Taylor”, and I said, “Yeah, I guess it was”.’
Mia Farrow, August 9: ‘(Campbell) was quite excited and said in effect, “Oh my God, in the middle of the night I was awoken by knocking at the door and it was men sent by Charles Taylor and he sent me a huge diamond.”‘
Carole White, August 9: ‘Naomi was very excited and telling me: ‘Oh, he’s going to give me some diamonds.’
