7 Dead At Kenyan Soccer Match following stampedeSpecial to USAfricaonline.com
Seven soccer fans were killed in Kenya when crowds scrambled to enter a stadium in the capital to watch two of Kenya’s most popular rival teams, game officials said late on Saturday.
The Kenya Red Cross confirmed that 7 people died in the stampede while trying to gain access to the football match.
It “was barely halfway through the first half when an agitated spectator, in a unprecedented stunt, rushed into the field of play in an attempt to get the referee to stop the match because … ‘people are being crushed to death,'” the league said on its website.
At the time, an ambulance was at the scene attending to victims, it continued.
After a 10-minute interruption, the match resumed, the league said.
Independent online says that Red Cross official Taitus Mong Mungou said that six people died at the venue, Nyayo National Stadium on Saturday and one died after being taken to Kenyatta National Hospital.
