Liberia’s President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf wins a controversial, boycotted run-off election

LIBERIA’S President, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, has been confirmed as the winner of a controversial run-off poll boycotted by the opposition, with only 37.4 per cent voter turnout.
The National Elections Commission chairperson chair Elizabeth Nelson said that with results tallied from 86.6 per cent of polling stations, Sirleaf won 90.8 per cent of very small votes cast. Her rival, Winston Tubman, who pulled out of the election and urged supporters to boycott it, got only 9 per cent.
USAfrica analysts are concerned that the “elections” may set the stage for another round of conflicts in the war-battered west Africa country.
Meanwhile, Sirleaf who was announced as co-winner of the Nobel Peace Prize in October 2011 has promised to reach out to her opponents. “I will reach out to all the presidential candidates. What I will offer them is not yet known because I haven’t really focused on organising the government.” ref: USAfricaonline.com
