On Friday, January 12, 2024, Zanzibaris convened at the New Amani Complex, formerly known as Amani Stadium, to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the Zanzibar Revolution, which transpired on January 12, 1964. This pivotal event resulted in the ousting of the Sultan of Zanzibar and his predominantly Arab administration by the local African revolutionaries.
President Hussein Ali Mwinyi of Zanzibar, along with Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan, Vice President Philip Mpango, Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa, and other government dignitaries, attended the celebration at the stadium. Notable international guests included Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni, Rwandan President Paul Kagame, Kenyan Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, and Burundian Prime Minister Gervais Ndirakobuca.
The event drew participation from heads of diplomatic missions, representatives of international organizations, cabinet ministers from both the Zanzibar government and the United Republic of Tanzania. Commencing with parades by the armed forces, special performances, and military displays, the ceremony featured individuals born on January 12 releasing balloons and pigeons in the stadium, accompanied by a commemorative song marking the 60th anniversary of the Zanzibar Revolution.
The celebrations marked the culmination of nearly a month of activities, including the inauguration and foundation stone laying for various social and economic projects by the leaders.
