British American Tobacco Nigeria (BATN) commemorates its 20th anniversary with a reflection on its substantial impact on the Nigerian economy and its achievements in environmental, social, and governance (ESG) initiatives.
Since its establishment over a century ago, BATN has been a significant contributor to the Nigerian economy. The celebration of the two-decade milestone at its technologically advanced Ibadan factory underscores the company’s commitment to sustainability, innovation, and responsible corporate citizenship.
BATN’s sustainability efforts are exemplified by the environmentally conscious design of its Ibadan factory, which was established in 2004. Equipped with energy-efficient features and a 1.4 MW solar panel system, the factory showcases BATN’s proactive approach to reducing its carbon footprint. The company aims to achieve carbon neutrality by 2030, setting a commendable standard for environmental stewardship within the industry.
The company’s journey in Nigeria has been marked by strategic investments and collaborations. The acquisition of NTC PLC in 2000 solidified its presence, while collaborative efforts with the federal government led to the commissioning of the state-of-the-art Ibadan Factory in 2003. BATN’s investments have bolstered the Nigerian economy, with third-party supplier NAMPAK SA investing US$30 million, and BATN itself contributing N415 billion in taxes and levies between 2018 and 2023.
BATN’s export operations, initiated in 2006, have further contributed to Nigeria’s economic diversification and foreign exchange earnings. The company’s exports, totalling over $110 million annually, position Nigeria as a key player in the West African market and beyond.
Beyond economic contributions, BATN prioritizes social responsibility, creating an estimated 350,000 direct and indirect jobs and investing N2 billion in Corporate Social Investment projects since 2003. The company’s commitment to diversity and inclusion is evident in its management team, with 38 percent representation of women in leadership roles.
BATN’s sustainability efforts extend to environmental conservation, with initiatives such as a 1.4 MW solar plant installation, achieving zero waste to landfill by 2020, and implementing cleaner burning CNG power in 2022. The company’s innovative cigarette butt recycling initiative demonstrates its commitment to a circular economy.
As BATN celebrates its rich history in Nigeria, it reaffirms its dedication to driving economic prosperity, environmental sustainability, and social progress. The company’s continued investments in innovation, sustainability, and social responsibility underscore its role as a valuable partner in Nigeria’s development journey.
