The African Union (AU) expressed its condolences on Tuesday over the tragic loss of life in Kenya resulting from severe flooding.
Kenyan authorities reported that heavy rains have led to devastating flash floods, claiming the lives of 169 people across several parts of the country.
Moussa Faki Mahamat, Chairperson of the African Union (AU) Commission, conveyed heartfelt sympathies and solidarity to the affected families, the government, and the people of Kenya amidst the widespread devastation caused by the floods. Mahamat’s statement was shared via social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter.
The current weather phenomenon in Kenya is attributed to El Nino-induced above-average rainfall, with the Kenya Meteorological Department warning of continued heavy rainfall throughout the week. This forecast raises concerns of further flooding and landslides in vulnerable areas.
Notable flash floods have occurred in Nairobi, Makueni, West Pokot, and Machakos counties, resulting in significant loss of life and property. The impact of the heavy rains has also led to the disruption of major transportation routes, business operations, and the postponement of school reopenings by a week.
In response to the crisis, a national multi-agency flood emergency team has been established to implement various measures aimed at assisting affected Kenyan citizens. These measures include the provision of essential supplies such as food, safe drinking water, healthcare resources, and rescue operations.
The devastating floods underscore the urgent need for coordinated efforts to address the challenges posed by extreme weather events and their impacts on vulnerable communities.
