(CBSN) – The United States and Russia are expected to issue a joint statement on Tuesday morning following discussions in Saudi Arabia aimed at securing a Black Sea maritime ceasefire, sources familiar with the matter told CBS News.
According to two sources, the statement is scheduled for release at 4 a.m. Washington, D.C. time and 11 a.m. in Moscow. While specific details remain unclear, reports from the U.S. technical team in Riyadh, shared with the Trump administration, indicate a positive outlook, the sources said.
Ukrainian officials have also been briefed on the developments, one source confirmed.
A previous maritime agreement, brokered by the United Nations and Turkey, facilitated the export of grain from both Ukraine and Russia but collapsed in 2023 after Moscow withdrew from the deal.
Representing the U.S. in the talks are Michael Anton of the State Department and Andrew Peek from the White House National Security Council.
Speaking on CBS’ Face the Nation on Sunday, National Security Advisor Mike Waltz stated that an aerial infrastructure ceasefire had already taken effect immediately after President Trump’s call with Russian President Vladimir Putin. He emphasized that the next priority was securing a maritime ceasefire to ensure the flow of essential goods.
“And then we’ll talk the line of control, which is the actual front lines, and that gets into the details of verification mechanisms, peacekeeping, freezing the lines where they are. And then, of course, the broader and permanent peace,” Waltz said.
Despite the ongoing diplomatic efforts, both Ukrainian and Russian forces have continued launching attacks.
