In a diplomatic response to its inclusion in a recent U.S. travel ban targeting 12 countries, Chad has announced the immediate suspension of visa issuance to American citizens. The decision, made public on Thursday, was confirmed by President Idriss Deby via a statement on his official Facebook page.
“I have instructed the government to act in accordance with the principles of reciprocity and suspend the issuance of visas to U.S. citizens,” Deby said.
The Chadian leader underscored his country’s stance on national sovereignty and pride, drawing a contrast with perceived preferential treatment offered by other nations.
“Chad has no planes to offer, no billions of dollars to give but Chad has its dignity and pride,” Deby added, referencing Qatar’s recent gift of a $400 million aircraft to U.S. President Donald Trump.
Chad is one of seven African nations included among the 12 countries affected by the latest travel restrictions imposed by the U.S. administration.
