The Cross River State House of Assembly has taken disciplinary action against the Chairman of Bekwarra Local Government Area, Hon. Theresa Ushie, placing her on a three-month suspension amid serious allegations of misconduct and financial impropriety raised by members of the Bekwarra Legislative Council.
This development was made public through a statement issued by Matthew Okache, Chief Press Secretary to the Speaker of the House. The statement noted that the suspension was implemented under the provisions of Section 14(3) of the Cross River State Local Government Law.
“In a resolution passed on the floor of the House, the Assembly directed that Hon. Theresa Ushie step aside for 90 days to allow for an independent investigation into the allegations without interference.
The Assembly considered and upheld the impeachment notice submitted by eight out of ten councilors from the Bekwarra Legislative Council. The petition, dated May 19, 2025, accused Hon. Ushie of financial misappropriation, administrative highhandedness, and gross abuse of power, alleging that she had consistently undermined due process and the rule of law in the discharge of her duties.”
The House further directed the Vice Chairman, Egbung Odama, to assume the position of Acting Chairman during the 90-day suspension period. His appointment, according to the statement, is intended to ensure the smooth and effective functioning of the local council while investigations are ongoing.
The Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Elvert Ayambem, emphasized the legislative body’s commitment to upholding integrity and transparency in local governance.
“I charge the House committees on Judiciary and public petition to commence a thorough investigation into the allegations and report their findings within the suspension window,” he added.
The suspension signals a proactive stance by the Assembly to reinforce accountability at the grassroots level and ensure that allegations of misconduct are addressed through due process.
