The Edo State Police Command has announced the successful rescue of 16 kidnap victims following a series of coordinated operations along the Benin–Lagos and Benin–Akure highways.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, August 27, 2025, the Police Public Relations Officer, Moses Yamu, explained that the interventions were carried out after multiple incidents on August 23, 2025, when armed kidnappers blocked sections of the highways and abducted several travellers.
According to Yamu, swift responses to distress calls led to the mobilisation of officers from the Iguobazuwa and Ekiadolor Divisions. They were supported by tactical teams, local vigilantes, and hunters who launched extensive bush-combing operations aimed at tracking the suspects and rescuing the hostages.
Edo State Commissioner of Police, Monday Agbonika, personally led part of the operation along the Benin–Akure route, where drones and other technical resources were deployed to improve precision and effectiveness.
“Six victims were rescued along the Benin–Akure Road, including one with a gunshot injury who is now receiving treatment. Three more victims were freed on the Benin–Lagos Road, while an additional seven regained their freedom on August 25,” the statement read.
Agbonika praised the joint efforts of security operatives, vigilantes, and community hunters, emphasizing that strong collaboration between security agencies and local communities is essential in combating violent crimes.
He further assured residents that operations are ongoing to secure the release of remaining victims and to bring the perpetrators to justice. The Commissioner added that the command will continue to combine manpower with advanced technology to strengthen safety along major Edo highways.
