USAfrica: Walmart to launch its first branded stores in South Africa; South Africa’s Shoprite to exit Ghana, Malawi

South African retail sales giant, Shoprite, continues to exit several of the African markets. It has announced plans to leave Ghana and Malawi.

Meanwhile, U.S. retail giant Walmart announced on September 9, 2025, it will launch its first Walmart-branded stores in South Africa, this year. The huge retailer owns the local retail group, Massmart.
