Nigerian Foreign Minister Yusuf Tuggar on Tuesday, November 4, 2025, firmly rejected allegations that the Nigerian government tolerates or supports religious persecution, insisting such actions are “impossible” under the nation’s legal framework.
Speaking at a joint press conference in Berlin with his German counterpart Johann Wadephul, Tuggar emphasized Nigeria’s “constitutional commitment to religious freedom and the rule of law.”
“This is what shows that it’s impossible for there to be a religious persecution that can be supported in any way, shape or form by the government of Nigeria at any level, be it federal, regional, or local. It’s impossible,” Tuggar said.
The minister’s remarks came in response to U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent warning of possible “fast” military action in Nigeria if the country fails to stop attacks on Christians.
Tuggar reaffirmed that Nigeria’s legal and institutional safeguards make any form of state involvement in religious discrimination inconceivable, reiterating that the government remains committed to protecting the rights and freedoms of all citizens.
