Special to USAfrica magazine (Houston) and USAfricaonline.com, the first Africa-owned, US-based newspaper published on the Internet.
I read the disheartening breaking news report on USAfricaonline.com, that: “The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has overturned the championship from Senegal’s national soccer team and declared Morocco the winner of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. CAF announced this decision a few hours ago on Tuesday, March 17, 2026.”
I believe that the most equitable course of action should have been to order a rematch, rather than award a 3–0 victory to Morocco. Matches are meant to be decided on the field of play, not in the courtroom.
It is important to point out that the acts of intimidation by Morocco went largely unaddressed, and the incident of towel interference used to distract the goalkeeper raises serious concerns about sportsmanship. Equally troubling was the officiating in the Morocco vs Nigeria encounter, which left much to be desired.
Why was the issue of poor officiating, which clearly marred the integrity of Africa Cup of Nations 2025, not thoroughly investigated? Such silence raises concerns and leaves many questioning the commitment to fairness and accountability.
Although the Confederation of African Football decided to award the trophy to Morocco, in the hearts of many, Senegal remains the true champion!
The world has seldom been perfectly fair, yet we choose to honour resilience and excellence.
Up Senegal. Sadio Mané, our hero.
