President Donald Trump said Tuesday he has agreed to a “double sided CEASEFIRE” with Iran, less than two hours before his deadline for Iran to either cut a deal with the U.S. or be the target of more severe attacks on its power plants, infrastructure and bridges.
“I agree to suspend the bombing and attack of Iran for a period of two weeks,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
He added that the U.S. has “already met and exceeded all Military objectives.”
He noted the ceasefire, which he agreed to at Pakistan’s request, was “subject to the Islamic Republic of Iran agreeing to the COMPLETE, IMMEDIATE, and SAFE OPENING of the Strait of Hormuz.”
Iran’s Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi confirmed that his country will halt “defensive operations” and Iran’s armed forces will coordinate to allow for “safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz.”
The negotiations were mediated by Pakistan.
Trump stated that Iran provided a 10-point peace proposal which he referred to as a “workable basis on which to negotiate.”
