The following is the breaking news report on Dec 25, 2009 from the AP: U.S. officials say a Northwest Airlines passenger from Nigeria said he was acting on behalf of al-Qaida when he tried to blow up a flight Friday as it landed in Detroit. Rep. Peter King, R-N.Y., identified the suspect as Abdul Mudallad, a Nigerian. King said the flight began in Nigeria and went through Amsterdam en route to Detroit.
One of the U.S. intelligence officials said the explosive device was a mix of powder and liquid. It failed when the passenger tried to detonate it. The passenger was being questioned Friday evening.
Both of the officials spoke on condition of anonymity because the investigation was continuing.
The motive of the Christmas Day attack was not immediately clear.
Authorities initially believed the passenger had set off firecrackers that caused some minor injuries.
Delta Air Lines spokeswoman Susan Elliott said the passenger was subdued immediately. She had no details on the injuries. Delta and Northwest have merged.
One passenger from the flight was taken to the University of Michigan Medical Center in Ann Arbor, hospital spokeswoman Tracy Justice said. She didn’t know the person’s condition, or whether the person was a man or woman. She referred all inquiries to the FBI.
An FBI spokeswoman in Detroit said the incident is being investigated. It came just as the flight, an Airbus 330 carrying 278 passengers, was arriving in Detroit from Amsterdam.
Passenger Syed Jafri, a U.S. citizen who had flown from the United Arab Emirates, said the incident occurred during the plane’s descent. Jafri said he was seated three rows behind the passenger and said he saw a glow, and noticed a smoke smell. Then, he said, “a young man behind me jumped on him.”
“Next thing you know, there was a lot of panic,” he said.
Rich Griffith, a passenger from Pontiac, said he was seated too far in the back to see what had happened. But he said he didn’t mind being detained on the plane for several hours. “It’s frustrating if you don’t want to keep your country safe,” he said. “We can’t have what’s going on everywhere else happening here.”
President Barack Obama was notified of the incident and discussed it with security officials, the White House said. It said he is monitoring the situation and receiving regular updates from his vacation spot in Hawaii.
J.P. Karas, 55, of Wyandotte, Mich., said he was driving down a road near the airport and saw a Delta jet at the end of the runway, surrounded by police cars, an ambulance, a bus and some TV trucks. “I don’t ever recall seeing a plane on that runway ever before and I pass by there frequently,” he said.
Karas said it was difficult to tell what was going on, but it looked like the front wheel was off the runway.
The Homeland Security Department said passengers may see additional screening measures on domestic and international flights because of the incident. “We encourage those with future travel plans to stay in touch with their airline and to visit www.tsa.gov for updates,” the department said.
Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano has been briefed on the incident and is closely monitoring the situation.
The department encouraged travelers to be observant and aware of their surroundings and report any suspicious behavior to law enforcement officials.

Nigeria, a Nation That so call leaders are eating their young ones. God will deal with them. how long shall we pretend that no terrors in Nigeria? The youths are angry the next will not be good for them. they are just digging their graves. God will DEAL with them for every pain we feel.
I still seat and wonder where this country is driving it ark of trust to…..One may kip wondering how this incidence could take it hold at this period when we're are still wearing a cloth to cover some of our crooked and fraudulent nakedness in world scene. Still assume an act of oblivious on the path of Farouk Abdul Mutallab case. A young Man who has it all in terms of (Education, Financial Muscle and the pleasures of life) From source and all indication, Farouk Abdul Mutallab is an Undergraduate student in the Uk. He's has a family that exutes opulence……The question is still on in my heavy mind, what does Farouk stands to benefit from this whole plight. Who are his accomplice????A lot of these questions will be asked in the subsequent weeks.
Investigaions by the FBI, Metropolitan police and the Interpol continues as the United States tightens its security in both local and int'l airports. The supposedly lagos-based nigerian is suspected to have links with al-Qaeda, and was said to have purchased his explosives at Yemen. He is also reported by medical officials to be in a state of shock.
i'm left in a shocking limbo!!! still befuddled/bemused to the situation….Welll!!!!!!!!!!!
Yet again, another tarnish and blemish on the name of the great nation that our fore-fathers worked hard to establish and build!
For some of us who go out daily to earn a living, we ara not surprised. This is the quality of the leaders we have in Nigeria. Men who cannot rule their own Homes but yet sit in Givernemnt for years destroying our great nation!!
One by one theie skeletons will be let out into the public Domain!!! Sit back and watch because more is coming out in 2010!!
When we even have a president who is ruling the country from a sick bed thousands of miles away?
The Lord is watching all of them and will quietly put all the older generation rulers to shame one by one!! They have literally destroyed that great nation for too long!!
There is something wrong here. An intelligence officer sitting nearby, a white powder, a black man a muslim name, = a set up! i wonder now what America will ask from Nigeria for (Mutallab's) release.

What do you think will be the result of the prayers been said by millions of people living well below the "poverty line" will be? Do you think God will sit and just watch them cry to him all day and all night?
When we even have a president who is ruling the country from a sick bed thousands of miles away? Who left the country without handing over to the Vice President? And yet He submitted a budget that includes $47millions for a residence for a VP who cannot "act" on his behalf!

I go by your whole thoughts to this…..I'll lay myself on intelligent thoughts. GEt back on it….
