Coup in Mali condemned by South Africa, U.S; looting of President Toure’s office continues.

A major set-back for democracy in Africa occurred a few hours ago today Thursday March 22, 2012 when soldiers in Mali seized power from President Amadou Toumani Toure. The soldiers have suspended the country’s constitution and several democratic institutions. Elections were scheduled before this coup for April 29, 2012; and Toure had removed himself having served 2 terms.
The coup leaders who are now known as the National Committee for the Reestablishment of Democracy and the Restoration of the State (CNRDR) claimed in a statement that: “The CNRDR representing all the elements of the armed forces, defensive forces and security forces has decided to assume its responsibilities and end the incompetent and disavowed regime of Amadou Toumani Toure…. The objective of the CNRDR does not in any way aim to confiscate power, and we solemnly swear to return power to a democratically elected president as soon as national unity and territorial integrity are established.”
Meanwhile, South Africa has taken a strong position that it “condemns any attempt to seize power through the use of force. We reiterate our conviction that no party should come to power through unlawful means.”
Also, the Obama administration has stated that the United States calling “for the immediate restoration of constitutional rule in Mali, including full civilian authority over the armed forces and respect for the country’s democratic institutions and traditions.”
USAfricaonline.com awaits Nigeria’s reaction to the illegal seizure of power in the west African gold producing country of Mali. Mali is landlocked and has a population of 14.5 million with almost 90% as Muslims. Several of the pro-Ghaddafi fighters in Libya moved to Mali after the ouster and killing of the former leader of Libya.
