South Africa’s President Zuma one-day visit to Nigeria on Tuesday

USAfrica, Houston: South Africa’s President Jacob Zuma will go for a one-day official visit to Africa’s most populated country Nigeria on Tuesday April 16, 2013. South Africa has become the

largest economy in the continent.
Zuma who is traveling with an influential business delegation started a working visit to Algeria from Sunday and Monday; from where will be hosted by Nigeria’s President Goodluck Jonathan.

Jonathan and Zuma were in Kenya last week Tuesday April 9 for the presidential
inauguration of the newly elected Uhuru Kenyatta.
Meanwhile, South Africa’s International Relations and Cooperation Deputy Minister Ebrahim Ebrahim notes that for the Algeria mission “South Africa and Algeria share common positions on key African and regional issues, including the resolution of the Mali conflict through dialogue, and the combating of terrorism and organised crime in the broader Sahel region, as well as on the decolonization of the Western Sahara.”

Regarding Tuesday’s Nigeria trip Ebrahim projects that the official discussions “will primarily focus on strengthening the bilateral relations between the two countries. Attention will also be given to regional, continental and multilateral issues.”

There are issues of immigration, lack of adequate security for many Nigerian immigrants.
Also, Nigeria enjoys a trading surplus “advantage” drawing from the skewed factor that 97% of South Africa’s imports from Nigeria are entirely from petroleum/crude oil. USAfrica notes that many South African corporations especially the telecom giant MTN count among the top investors and revenue earners in Nigeria. There are mid-level investments by Nigerian politicians and business persons in agriculture, medical services and petroleum resources marketing and trading.

Hopefully, Nigerian businesses and government will seek additional ways of expanding non-oil business with its competitive regional leader it helped free from the clutches of apartheid in the early 1990s. Chido/USAfrica
