Donald Trump said that documents from the congressional investigation into the attack on the US Capitol on January 6, 2021, might be important to his defense against accusations of election meddling. However, a judge denied his request to view the records on Monday, November 27, 2023.
The Democratic-led House of Representatives investigation concluded in 2022, and U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan in Washington concluded that Trump “has not sufficiently justified his requests” for information related to it.
Subpoenas for documents that Trump’s attorneys claimed were “missing” from the House probe included transcripts and video recordings of interviews with law enforcement.
The judge came to the conclusion that Trump’s attorneys had not demonstrated how video evidence of those same conversations could be relevant to his defense, and that prosecutors had already provided Trump with written transcripts of those interviews.
In response to accusations that he illegally attempted to avert his loss in the 2020 election, Trump entered a not-guilty plea. Trump, the front-runner for the Republican nomination in 2024, is the target of four criminal cases, one of which was brought by Special Counsel Jack Smith.
Smith’s team revealed new details regarding the January search warrant for Trump account information that was given to Twitter, now known as X, on Monday in response to a decision from a different court. According to court documents, the warrant requested data on every electronic device that accessed Trump’s account between October 2020 and January 2021, along with the contents of any direct messages sent and received from the account.
After his supporters’ 2021 Capitol riot, Trump’s Twitter account was suspended. After Elon Musk became the platform’s CEO, the ban was removed in November 2022.
Twitter objected to the court’s decision to prevent prosecutors from telling Trump about the warrant, but the court granted the request.
On December 11, Trump is scheduled to testify again in his ongoing civil fraud trial in New York, according to a statement released by his attorneys on Monday, November 27, 2023.
