The Oil and Gas Technical Apprentice Programme (OGTAP) is offering a unique internship opportunity for young Nigerians to gain practical training and qualifications in the energy sector. The program combines 21 months of college-based learning with two years of hands-on experience at leading industry companies, preparing participants for roles as skilled technicians in the oil and gas industry.
Managed by OPITO and the ECITB, the OGTAP scheme has been recognized as one of the most successful apprenticeship programs in the sector since its establishment in 1999. Participants benefit from industry-standard training and earn globally recognized certifications.
Eligibility Criteria for the 2025 OGTAP Internship
To apply for the 2025 OGTAP internship, candidates must meet the following criteria:
- Be between 16 and 35 years old as of May 2025.
- Possess a National Identity Number (NIN), which must be verified before application submission.
- Submit only one application, as multiple entries will result in disqualification.
- Obtain credit grades in core O’ Level subjects, including Mathematics, English, Physics, Chemistry, and one additional subject from WAEC, NECO, NABTEB, or NBAIS.
- Higher qualifications such as Diplomas, Higher National Diplomas (HND), Bachelor’s Degrees, or Postgraduate Degrees in Engineering, Science, or related fields are also accepted.
Comprehensive Training and Certification
Participants in the OGTAP program will undergo rigorous training during their apprenticeship, earning a variety of qualifications, including:
- Scottish Vocational Qualification (SVQ) Level 2 in Performing Engineering Operations.
- A National Certificate and a Higher National Certificate in their chosen discipline.
- OPITO Global Standards Certification for Oil and Gas Level 2.
Following the 21-month college phase, apprentices will receive two years of mentorship and on-the-job training with a sponsoring energy company. By the end of this phase, participants will earn an SVQ Level 3, equipping them for a fulfilling career in the oil and gas industry.

- Mechanical Maintenance
- Process Operations
- Instrumentation and Control Maintenance
Apprentices specialize in one discipline, acquiring the skills and knowledge necessary for their chosen field.
