The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has reaffirmed its commitment to combating corruption and enhancing service delivery through digital transformation.
Speaking on Thursday, March 20, 2025, Comptroller General of the NIS, Kemi Nandap, highlighted the agency’s efforts in leveraging technology to improve efficiency, reduce bureaucratic delays, and curb corrupt practices. She noted that key initiatives, such as the Contactless Passport Application System and the soon-to-be-launched e-Visa platform, are designed to streamline immigration processes.
Promoting Transparency Through Digital Innovation
During the official launch of the Service’s 3rd Nationwide Sensitization and Awareness Campaign Against Corruption 2025, themed “Increased Digitalization and Consolidated Innovations for Efficient and Transparent Services,” Nandap emphasized the role of technology in fostering a more transparent immigration system.
She also underscored the importance of strategic partnerships with key anti-corruption agencies, including SERVICOM, the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). These collaborations, she explained, are aimed at strengthening internal controls and ensuring ethical governance within the NIS.
Support for Anti-Corruption Efforts
Speaking at the event, the Director General of the Presidential Enabling Business Environment Council (PEBEC), Princess Zahrah Mustapha Audu, acknowledged corruption as a major obstacle to economic growth and ease of doing business in Nigeria. She commended the NIS for its proactive steps in promoting a transparent, service-driven immigration system that supports national development.
Similarly, the National Coordinator and Chief Executive of SERVICOM, Mrs. Nnena Akajemeli, and ICPC representative, Mr. Demola Bakare, praised the NIS for prioritizing efficiency and transparency. They also identified areas for further improvement and reiterated their commitment to supporting the NIS in delivering fair and customer-friendly services.
Challenges in the Contactless Passport Renewal System
The NIS initially announced the Contactless Passport Renewal System in October 2023, with plans to launch it in Canada on November 1 and in Nigeria by December. However, the Nigerian rollout was delayed until February 2024.
Despite its launch, many Nigerians have faced challenges using the system. Several users who downloaded the NIS mobile app reported difficulties completing the online renewal process, with some unable to progress beyond profile creation.
The initiative was introduced to simplify and modernize the passport renewal process, reducing the need for in-person visits to NIS offices. According to the NIS, the system is designed to allow individuals to renew their passports entirely online, offering greater convenience.
As the agency continues its digital transformation, stakeholders are calling for further improvements to ensure that technological advancements effectively enhance service delivery and eliminate inefficiencies.
