Fresh tension has erupted within the African Democratic Congress following disagreements and accusations surrounding preparations for the party’s presidential primaries ahead of the 2027 elections.
The crisis reportedly deepened after several aspirants and party stakeholders accused some influential figures within the party of attempting to manipulate the process in favor of preferred candidates. Complaints over delegate selection, transparency and alleged backdoor agreements have continued to fuel divisions among members.
Sources within the party said disagreements intensified after coalition talks involving opposition politicians from different political backgrounds began influencing internal party structures. Some long-standing ADC members reportedly expressed concern that newer entrants and powerful political blocs were beginning to dominate key decisions ahead of the primaries.
Supporters of some presidential hopefuls accused party leaders of sidelining grassroots members while negotiating elite political arrangements behind closed doors. There were also allegations that certain aspirants were being pressured to step down in favor of a consensus candidate, a move critics described as undemocratic.
The growing dispute has reportedly created factions within the party, with some members threatening legal action if the primary process is not conducted transparently. Others warned that unresolved grievances could weaken the ADC’s chances of emerging as a strong opposition force in 2027.
Political analysts say the internal disagreements could become a major test for the ADC, especially as the party continues to attract attention from opposition politicians seeking a united platform against the ruling APC. Observers also noted that the way the party handles the crisis may shape public confidence in its ability to provide an alternative political direction for Nigeria.
Despite the controversy, party officials have appealed for calm and insisted that the presidential primary process would remain credible and inclusive. However, behind the scenes, consultations and negotiations are said to be intensifying as different political interests battle for control of the party’s future direction.
