The First Lady of Abia State, Priscilla Otti, has commissioned 35 newly built homes for widows across the 17 local government areas of the state in what officials described as a major humanitarian and social support initiative.
The housing project, unveiled during a ceremony attended by government officials, community leaders and beneficiaries, was designed to provide shelter and relief for vulnerable widows facing difficult living conditions across different communities in the state.
Speaking during the commissioning, Mrs. Otti said the initiative was aimed at restoring dignity, hope and stability to widows who have struggled with economic hardship and inadequate housing after losing their spouses. She emphasized the importance of supporting vulnerable members of society and encouraging compassion-driven governance.
According to officials involved in the project, beneficiaries were selected from different local government areas based on need, living conditions and recommendations from community leaders and social welfare coordinators.
The First Lady also noted that the project forms part of broader welfare and empowerment programs targeted at women, children and disadvantaged families in Abia State. She urged the beneficiaries to maintain the homes properly and continue supporting one another within their communities.
Governor Alex Otti commended the initiative and reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to social intervention programs aimed at improving the lives of ordinary residents.
Several beneficiaries who received the homes expressed gratitude to the state government, describing the gesture as life-changing and a source of renewed hope after years of hardship.
The project has attracted positive reactions from community groups and social advocates who praised the state government for focusing attention on widows and vulnerable households often neglected in many social development programs.
