Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele has accused opposition parties of politicizing the debate surrounding the recently passed State Police Bill. In a statement released from his media office, Bamidele emphasized that, rather than engaging in political posturing, critics should focus on solutions to strengthen Nigeria’s security.
Bamidele, who represents the Ekiti Central Senatorial District, highlighted the need for a united front in enhancing national security. He criticized the opposition for not offering constructive ideas, asserting that security is a collective good that should transcend ethnic and political divides.
The State Police Bill, which was approved by the Senate last Wednesday, has faced criticism from several quarters, including Garba Maidoki from the African Democratic Congress (ADC). Maidoki expressed concerns about the timing of the bill and alleged insufficient time for lawmakers to review its provisions.
Opposition from the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) focused on a lack of confidence in President Bola Tinubu’s administration to implement the bill effectively. Paul Ibe, media adviser to the ADC presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar, claimed that political motives were at play in the initiative, particularly with the upcoming 2027 general elections looming.
In defense of the legislative process, Bamidele noted that the bill underwent extensive debate in both the Senate and House of Representatives, stating that members from various opposition parties also voted in favor of it. He reported that 84 out of 109 Senators supported the bill, reflecting a significant approval rating of 77.06% in the Senate.
