The Izu Umunna Cultural Association (IUCA), a socio-cultural group representing the Igbo community, has expressed its appreciation for Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang’s recent apology to the Igbo people regarding the Nigerian Civil War. The organization characterized the apology as a courageous and timely gesture, essential for a nation still facing ethnic tensions.
During a recent meeting with Igbo leaders from Plateau’s 17 local government areas, Mutfwang emphasized the importance of moving beyond the past. He urged the Igbo to continue their contributions to Nigeria’s socio-economic and political landscape, describing the civil conflict as a tragic manipulation of citizens. “We have become one family because our people were deceived into going to war, and we regret it. We must close that chapter and move forward,” he stated.
However, Mutfwang’s comments drew criticism from several stakeholders in Plateau State, including former Sports Minister Solomon Dalung and ex-Commissioner for Information Dan Manjang. They suggested that the governor unfairly shifted the blame onto the Plateau community. Additionally, members of the Hausa community have called for a similar apology regarding indigene issues.
In their official statement, signed by IUCA President Jerry Egede and Secretary Jude Owuamanam, the organization asserted that Mutfwang’s apology marks a significant step towards national reconciliation. They noted that the apology “couldn’t have come at a better time,” highlighting a national need for healing across ethnic divides.
IUCA described the civil war as a deep-seated scar in the consciousness of every Igbo individual, lamenting the absence of prior national leadership willing to acknowledge the tragedy. They emphasized that given the middle belt’s pivotal role in the conflict, Mutfwang’s gesture was particularly relevant. “If they say it wasn’t his place to offer the apology, who else would?” the organization questioned.
In closing, IUCA pledged its “unwavering support” for Mutfwang’s administration and encouraged the Igbo community in Plateau to foster peaceful relations and support government development initiatives.
