Nigerian soldiers from the 162 Amphibious Battalion, under the Joint Task Force North-East’s Operation Hadin Kai, successfully repelled an attack by ISWAP militants at the Forward Operating Base Mandaragirau in Biu, Borno State. The military reported that the attempted assault occurred around 2:00 AM on August 15, 2026.
According to Captain Mohammed Goni, the Acting Military Information Officer for the task force, the militants launched simultaneous attacks from two directions. The troops utilized early-warning and surveillance systems to detect the advance and swiftly dispatched a combat team to engage the attackers.
A fierce exchange of gunfire ensued, resulting in the defeat of the terrorists on one front. The second group also faced heavy resistance as they attempted to infiltrate the camp, leading to their retreat.
The military conducted a hot pursuit following the assault, which yielded the elimination of several attackers and the recovery of significant weapons and equipment, including AK-47 rifles, a rocket-propelled grenade launcher, and various other combat gear. Surveillance footage indicated that the attackers were seen dragging the bodies of their deceased comrades away from the scene.
Notably, there were no casualties among the Nigerian troops. The operation underscored the readiness and effectiveness of the Nigerian military, which continues to work toward restoring peace and security in the region.
The Theatre Command praised the leadership and tactical acumen of the troops for their swift and effective response to the attack.
