In a bold move, President Donald Trump announced on August 27 that Lake Ontario will be officially renamed to Lake America, effective immediately. This decision comes amidst escalating trade tensions between the United States and Canada, and follows rising tariffs imposed by both nations.
During the announcement made in the Oval Office, Trump criticized Canadian officials, describing them as ‘nasty’ and accusing them of charging U.S. farmers excessive tariffs of up to 400%. He stated, ‘We filed all the necessary papers, documents, everything else. We notified all of the various people that we have to notify. So we’ve done everything that you have to do, and this is official, effective immediately.’
Lake Ontario, which lies between Canada to the north and New York to the south, has been at the center of this trade dispute. The President had previously renamed the Gulf of Mexico to the ‘Gulf of America’ in an earlier act. He has indicated that further name changes might occur as part of this initiative.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has responded to this move by severing trade talks, alleging that the U.S. is attempting to undermine Canada’s economy. In retaliation to the recent 50% tariffs that Trump imposed on various Canadian goods, Carney has vowed to implement counter-tariffs starting September 8.
This ongoing trade war, marked by a series of tariffs targeting items ranging from beer to automotive parts, continues to strain relations between the two neighboring countries.
