Nigeria’s Vice President, Kashim Shettima, has announced that the country will no longer tolerate the dehumanization of its citizens on the international stage. His remarks came after a visit to Luanda, Angola, where he represented President Bola Tinubu at an African Union summit.
During a press briefing before his return to Nigeria, Shettima emphasized the country’s strong stance against xenophobic and Afrophobic violence directed towards Nigerians and other Africans in South Africa. He stated that the Nigerian government, along with its populace, would not condone situations that compromise the dignity and safety of its citizens.
Shettima advocated for open dialogues with South African officials, underscoring the importance of maintaining civil relations while firmly addressing unacceptable behaviors. He stressed the need for the South African government to protect human rights as it implements immigration policies.
Furthermore, Shettima recalled Nigeria’s historical involvement in assisting Southern African nations during their liberation struggles, expressing deep concern for the treatment of Nigerians facing humiliation abroad. He reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to peaceful resolutions while firmly advocating for the respect and protection of its citizens.
