Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, has articulated strong motivations behind his support for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election in 2027. During a recent media interaction in Port Harcourt, Wike warned that if Tinubu were to lose, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi would seek retribution against him.
Wike stated, “If anything happens, and President Tinubu fails today, I will be the first politician that Atiku, Obi will hunt for his head.” This statement suggests that Wike views his political choices as fraught with serious implications, projecting a sense of urgency in ensuring Tinubu’s victory.
The minister’s remarks also illuminate a backdrop of political rivalry, particularly with Atiku Abubakar, whom Wike opposed during the 2022 PDP presidential primary. His allegiance to Tinubu marks a significant shift, as he had formerly led a group of governors resisting the Democratic Party’s presidential candidate in the last election.
Wike emphasized that his focus is on Tinubu’s re-election, stating, “Each day I sleep, I am thinking about the President’s re-election. When I am eating, I think about the President’s re-election.” This underscores the notion that his political future may be intertwined with the outcome of the election.
Despite being a member of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Wike has become a prominent advocate for Tinubu and is actively supporting an APC candidate for governor in Rivers State, thereby complicating his political identity within the PDP ranks.
