The United States has authorized the sale of $5 billion worth of bombs to Saudi Arabia, aiming to enhance the kingdom’s defense capabilities in light of recent regional conflicts. This decision comes as Saudi Arabia faces increasing drone and missile attacks by Iranian forces and the Houthi rebels from Yemen.
The US State Department stated that the sale intends to improve Saudi Arabia’s airborne defense capabilities, ensuring better preparedness against both present and future threats. Additionally, it aims to strengthen Saudi Arabia’s homeland defense and foster interoperability with US and allied forces in the Gulf region.
Furthermore, the department noted that the sale aligns with US foreign policy goals and national security objectives by reinforcing the security of a key partner in the Middle East, classified as a Major non-NATO Ally.
The proposal has been communicated to Congress, although it remains pending approval from US lawmakers.
