In a tragic incident at Miami International Airport, five people have lost their lives after an Amazon cargo plane overshot the runway and collided with vehicles on Sunday. The Boeing 767, operating as Prime Air Flight 7598, had just arrived from San Juan, Puerto Rico, when it crashed around 1:58 PM local time.
Miami-Dade County Fire Chief Ray Jadallah reported that, in addition to the five fatalities, three individuals were critically injured and taken to trauma centers, while two others received treatment at a local hospital.
The crash resulted in a fire, with thick smoke observed coming from the aircraft. Jadallah noted that emergency responders faced challenges as victims were trapped in vehicles struck by the plane. Specialized teams were required for the extrication of both the pilot and co-pilot, whose survival remains unclear.
Approximately 200 firefighters and 60 fire apparatuses were deployed to the scene, employing foam to extinguish the fire in the aircraft’s engine compartment and managing a fuel leak.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has launched an investigation into the crash, with fire officials stating that the exact cause will be determined in collaboration with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
Amazon expressed its condolences through a spokesperson, stating, “We’re heartbroken to learn that five people lost their lives in today’s incident. Our deepest sympathies go out to the families and loved ones affected by this devastating loss.”
Miami Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz described the scene as “really tragic” but confirmed there was “no apparent threat to public safety.” Following the crash, the airport suspended operations on all runways, causing significant delays and cancellations. As of late Sunday, two runways had reopened, and travelers were advised to check with airlines for updates.
Mayor Daniella Levine Cava praised the first responders for their quick actions in addressing the emergency.
