In a recent post on X, OpenAI Chief Executive Sam Altman emphasized significant risks associated with the swift advancement of artificial intelligence. Altman outlined two critical scenarios that could endanger humanity’s future.
Firstly, he warned that humanity could lose control of AI, which he described as an unacceptable outcome. “We are unapologetically on Team Humanity,” he stated. Secondly, he addressed the threat of power concentration, suggesting that if a single entity were to wield an exceedingly powerful AI, it could impose a singular worldview, resulting in a dystopian reality.
This warning comes amidst heightened scrutiny in the tech sector, following a call from Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei for companies to pause the development of advanced AI models. This plea gained traction after a researcher from Anthropic, Jacob Coxon, voiced concerns about the existential risks artificial intelligence poses, claiming that unchecked AI advancements could lead to catastrophic outcomes within the decade.
As global competition intensifies, particularly between the US and China, concerns are mounting that advanced AI could grant one country substantial military and surveillance advantages. Guo Jiakun, a spokesperson for China’s Foreign Ministry, criticized the US’s fear-based rhetoric, arguing that it could hinder effective global AI governance.
