The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has issued a call to the government, requesting the implementation of wage awards for workers as a response to escalating petrol prices that are negatively affecting the populace. The NLC’s statement comes during a period of political campaigning, highlighting concerns over the burden of rising living costs on citizens.
The labor organization criticized the government for allowing marketers to impose high prices under the framework of deregulation. It urged officials to consider subsidizing essential goods, particularly in times of crisis.
According to the NLC, petrol costs have soared to approximately N1,430 in major cities, with even higher prices in less accessible regions. This surge in transportation costs has a ripple effect on other expenses, including school fees, rents, and food prices, significantly impacting the quality of life.
In a statement titled “Save the Situation Now,” NLC President Joe Ajaero emphasized the need for protective measures against international market fluctuations, particularly in light of ongoing conflicts affecting oil supply. He pointed out that Nigeria, as an oil-producing nation with local refining capability, should implement policies to mitigate these challenges.
The NLC’s recommendations include providing wage awards to workers, selling crude in naira to local refineries, and enhancing national storage capacity for energy security. These measures, they argue, could create jobs and contribute to overall economic stability.
Notably, the NLC highlighted that the government is currently benefiting from higher-than-expected revenue from oil sales on the international market, which presents an opportunity to support citizens during these challenging times.
