The International Criminal Police Organisation (Interpol) has announced the successful identification of 126 suspected foreign terrorist fighters through a counter-terrorism operation enhanced by artificial intelligence. This initiative, named Operation Shams II, involved collaboration from 28 specialized officers and experts from 11 countries, including Nigeria.
Other nations participating in the operation included Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Iraq, Kenya, Malaysia, the Philippines, Qatar, Tajikistan, Tunisia, and Uzbekistan. The operation utilized AI and facial recognition technology to analyze visual materials published by jihadist groups, marking it as a groundbreaking effort in the realm of counter-terrorism.
Initially, the operation extracted over 108,000 facial images from jihadist visuals, which were narrowed to 6,362 unique images for processing within Interpol’s facial recognition framework. This process was further supported by additional images from the National Central Bureau in Baghdad. The use of sophisticated AI agents facilitated the automated collection and verification of data, allowing officers to identify the 126 suspects effectively.
Interpol stated that these discoveries contribute significantly to ongoing intelligence regarding the suspects, including their potential locations and social networks. The newly identified data will be integrated into Interpol’s databases, thereby bolstering international efforts aimed at monitoring and disrupting terrorist movements.
Investigators have begun utilizing leads from the operation to support judicial actions within the participating states, with ongoing processing of thousands more images that may yield additional insights.
Moreover, the initiative included the usage of cryptocurrency tracing tools, underscoring efforts to track illicit financing. Interpol has made requests to a virtual asset service provider for customer information linked to possible financing of terrorism. Collaboration with stakeholders from the online gaming sector was also part of the operation to combat youth radicalization in digital spaces.
As the operation progresses, Interpol emphasizes that all findings produced through AI technologies undergo thorough review by trained personnel to ensure accuracy before any further action is undertaken.
