The Nigerian government has taken significant action following the deaths of 37 suspected illegal miners in custody. Acting on directives from President Bola Tinubu, 20 officers of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) have been suspended while an independent committee investigates the incident.
The suspensions were announced by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, who described the situation as deeply disturbing. The measure aims to ensure a thorough and transparent examination of the events leading to the miners’ deaths, which reportedly occurred last Thursday.
The affected officers are from various ranks and include station guards, arresting officers, and those responsible for legal matters. A comprehensive list of the suspended personnel has been issued by the Ministry.
In addition, a 10-member independent committee has been formed to investigate the circumstances surrounding the deaths. This committee is tasked with identifying the deceased, exploring the conditions of their arrest and detention, and determining the factors that led to their demise.
Minister Tunji-Ojo emphasized the government’s obligation to provide a transparent account of the incident to the victims’ families and the public. He stated that the committee would assess accountability and recommend actions, including possible compensation and measures to prevent future occurrences.
Furthermore, the Minister has instructed NSCDC leadership and relevant personnel to fully cooperate with the investigation. He warned that any attempts to destroy evidence or intimidate witnesses will be regarded as serious offenses. The committee is expected to submit its findings within two weeks, including recommendations to enhance operational accountability.
In the meantime, Minister Tunji-Ojo has extended his condolences to the families affected by this tragedy, urging public calm as the investigation unfolds.
