President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will not be attending the ongoing 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York. This decision comes as the Presidency confirmed that Tinubu is returning to Nigeria following a three-week vacation in Europe.
Stanley Nkwocha, the spokesman for Vice President Kashim Shettima, provided details in a statement released on Sunday. The statement indicated that President Tinubu directed Shettima to represent Nigeria at the assembly.
Tinubu’s absence was further corroborated by a provisional list of speakers obtained by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), showing that Shettima is slated to speak at the high-level General Debate, which is part of the session.
Notably, President Tinubu was scheduled to be the 10th speaker during the morning session on September 23, the second day of the General Debate. The UNGA commenced on September 8, and the high-level week is set to run from September 22 to 29 in New York City.
