Akpabio defended the president’s prolonged absence, stating that advancements in communication technology allow for governance from any location. He made it clear that the president is still actively directing the country’s affairs, referencing Tinubu’s ongoing diplomatic engagements, such as discussions with French President Emmanuel Macron.
The Senate President’s remarks come at a time when there is heightened scrutiny regarding the constitutional implications of the leaders’ absences, particularly the absence of both Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima. Critics, including the African Democratic Congress and the Peoples Democratic Party, argue that Tinubu’s unavailability during significant global events, including the ongoing United Nations General Assembly, raises questions about his leadership commitment.
Political factions are demanding transparency on whether the necessary constitutional provisions were followed regarding the president’s extended leave. The ADC has specifically highlighted the requirement for written notification to the Senate and House of Representatives when the president is away for more than 21 days.
Opposition voices are further criticizing Tinubu’s decision to remain abroad while global leaders engage in vital discussions at the UNGA, emphasizing the disconnect between the president’s actions and pressing national issues at home.
