The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced that Thursday, October 1, 2026, will be observed as a public holiday to mark the nation’s 66th Independence Anniversary. This declaration was made by Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, through a statement issued by the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Dr. Magdalene Ajani.
In his message, the minister extended congratulations to Nigerians both domestically and internationally, encouraging them to reflect on the journey since independence and to recommit to fostering a united, peaceful, and prosperous nation.
Dr. Tunji-Ojo stressed the significance of peace and stability in driving national development. He called upon citizens to embody the patriotism demonstrated by the nation’s founding fathers, emphasizing that Nigeria’s diversity is one of its greatest strengths. He expressed optimism that with collective effort, a brighter future for the country is achievable.
As Nigeria celebrates 66 years of independence, he urged the public to utilize the occasion to showcase unity, patriotism, and mutual respect, while honoring the sacrifices made by past heroes. Nigeria attained independence from British rule on October 1, 1960, and will commemorate this significant milestone on Thursday.
