Family members, friends, and notable figures from Nigeria’s entertainment industry gathered in Lagos on Wednesday to commemorate the life of esteemed actor Olu Jacobs. The ‘Night of Tributes and Service of Songs’ took place at Glover Memorial Hall, attracting a host of personalities including Jide Kosoko, Adebayo Salami, and Funke Akindele.
Olu Jacobs, affectionately known as the “Lion of Lufodo,” passed away on September 16 at the age of 84. The memorial event began with a candlelight procession, allowing attendees to celebrate Jacobs’ contributions to theatre, television, and film.
His widow, renowned actress Joke Silva, and their sons, Gbenga and Olusoji, attended the ceremony, which included Bible readings, performances, and heartfelt tributes from those who had collaborated with Jacobs throughout his expansive career.
Reflecting on his father, Soji Jacobs highlighted their close bond, noting that despite his father’s fame, he always prioritized being a caring parent. “I didn’t really watch his films back then. For me, he was simply dad,” he remarked.
Veteran actor Norbert Young praised Jacobs’ professionalism, recalling how working together on the series The Third Eye profoundly impacted his own career. Tributes also came from actresses Hilda Dokubo and Kate Henshaw, who emphasized Jacobs’ nurturing spirit and dedication to helping his colleagues.
Richard Mofe-Damijo shared an important lesson he learned from Jacobs, reiterating that every actor and line hold significance in any production. The evening was filled with emotional remembrances, including a moving performance by singer Yinka Davies, further honoring Jacobs’ legacy.
The Night of Tributes marks the beginning of a series of events organized by his family, with a funeral service set for Friday, October 2, at This Present House in Lekki Phase 1, Lagos.
