President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has extended his congratulations to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, marking the 25th anniversary of Modi’s assumption of public office. In a statement released on Wednesday, Tinubu described this milestone as a “historic” achievement, reflecting the ongoing trust the Indian populace holds in their leader.
“On behalf of the Government and people of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and on my own behalf, I extend warm and fraternal congratulations to His Excellency Shri Narendra Modi, Prime Minister of the Republic of India, on a truly historic milestone,” Tinubu stated.
Modi first assumed office as Chief Minister of Gujarat in 2001, serving in that role for over 12 years before becoming Prime Minister in 2014. Tinubu acknowledged that such an extended duration of leadership is a rare feat in democratic contexts, particularly in India, the world’s most populous nation.
Highlighting Modi’s accomplishments, Tinubu mentioned advancements in infrastructure, digital public goods, financial inclusion, and innovation during Modi’s leadership. “Across these 25 years, Prime Minister Modi has led with vision and an unwavering commitment to development,” he added.
He pointed out that Modi’s leadership has significantly contributed to Gujarat’s transformation and India’s status as one of the largest and fast-growing economies globally. “His efforts have lifted millions and inspired nations across the Global South,” Tinubu stated.
The Nigerian president further emphasized the importance of the relationship between Nigeria and India, referring to both countries as “great nations” and key advocates for the Global South. He recalled Modi’s State Visit to Nigeria in November 2024, during which Nigeria honored Modi with the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON). This visit, according to Tinubu, revitalized cooperation in various sectors including trade, investment, energy, and technology.
Additionally, he expressed confidence that both nations, sharing a common democratic ethos, would continue to strengthen their bonds of friendship under Modi’s ongoing leadership.
