U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio delivered a strong message in Athens on Wednesday, stressing the critical need for the West to assert its national power. Speaking beneath the Acropolis, Rubio urged Europe to ‘awaken from its long slumber’ at a pivotal moment in history.
Rubio articulated the U.S. position under President Donald Trump, highlighting a commitment to national power that includes revitalizing supply chains, enhancing defense capabilities, and pursuing technological dominance. ‘Either we choose to act now, or lose the choice to act at all,’ he warned.
The Secretary outlined that the resurgence of competition among great powers has led to new vulnerabilities and threats, including terrorism. He underscored the necessity for alliances, saying that Europe must also step up its defense spending and partnerships.
In his speech, Rubio expressed optimism about emerging signs in Europe, envisioning a potential ‘generational shift’ towards increased defense initiatives and manufacturing efforts. He reiterated the importance of the U.S.-Greece alliance against the backdrop of instability in the Middle East and the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
Rubio’s visit came amid protests in Athens, where over 2,000 demonstrators gathered to voice their opposition to his visit. The demonstration occurred in Syntagma Square, which was heavily secured by police.
Media coverage regarding potential conflicts of interest involving U.S. Ambassador Kimberly Guilfoyle cast a shadow over Rubio’s visit. Congressman Gregory Meeks sought clarification on reports suggesting Guilfoyle had made statements about the U.S. influencing political change in Europe.
The U.S. Secretary of State was scheduled to meet with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis in the evening before departing for Lisbon.
