Saudi authorities confirmed that three individuals were killed and 36 injured during missile attacks on the Abha and King Khalid International airports, claimed by Yemen’s Houthi forces. The incidents heightened tensions in the region as fighting between the Houthis and Saudi-backed forces escalated.
The attacks occurred on Tuesday and Wednesday, with the Houthis asserting responsibility for the missile strikes aimed at these key transport hubs. The Saudi civil aviation authority reported that casualties included an Egyptian and an Algerian at Abha airport and a Sudanese individual at the Riyadh airport.
In retaliation, the Saudi-led coalition announced that it had destroyed the launch platform used for the Riyadh missile strike and targeted a total of 82 military sites associated with the Houthis, including missile facilities and command centers. The coalition condemned the assaults as brutal and vowed that such actions would not go unanswered.
The conflict in Yemen has intensified following a resurgence of hostilities in July, with the Houthi militia, which controls significant portions of the northwest, battling against the Saudi-supported Yemeni government. The ongoing fighting has led to the displacement of over 200,000 individuals, according to United Nations reports.
The situation remains fluid, with both sides reporting varied claims of territorial advancements amid losses. The humanitarian crisis stemming from the war continues to affect the majority of Yemen’s population, leaving many reliant on aid.
