A gas pipeline explosion in Aleto community, located in the Eleme Local Government Area of Rivers State, has injured at least 20 individuals and caused significant property damage. The incident occurred on Thursday around 5 p.m. along Old Bori Road, reportedly due to a ruptured pipeline belonging to the Nigeria Gas Company.
Witnesses claim that the pipeline had been leaking for approximately three weeks prior to the explosion, raising concerns about the lack of prompt action from the authorities. Community leaders reportedly alerted relevant parties about the ongoing leak but found that no adequate measures were taken to prevent the incident.
Daniel Chuma, the Leader of the Eleme Legislative Council, confirmed the explosion and expressed concern over the lack of response from the gas company. He indicated that he had previously written to the company regarding the gas leak and had also petitioned the National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA) and the Rivers State Ministry of Environment for urgent intervention.
The explosion has affected nearby properties, including homes, a mechanic workshop, and parked vehicles. Community members have cordoned off the affected area and advised residents to keep their distance for safety.
Meanwhile, the Youths and Environmental Advocacy Centre (YEAC-Nigeria) has urged both the Rivers State and Federal Governments, along with relevant environmental agencies, to intervene. They have called for NOSDRA to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident and determine the circumstances surrounding the explosion.
The rising number of reported injuries and extensive property damage has intensified demands for a detailed inquiry into the incident, emphasizing the need for effective measures to safeguard residents in Aleto.
