President Bola Tinubu recently led a National Security Council (NSC) meeting at the State House in Abuja to address security preparations for the January 2027 general elections. The meeting lasted approximately five hours and included attendance from key security personnel including the National Security Adviser, the Minister of Defence, and various heads of military and police agencies.
General Christopher Musa, the Minister of Defence, stated that the primary objective was to update the president on the current security conditions as the elections approach. He emphasized that the president aims for a free, fair, and credible election, highlighting the importance of ensuring citizens can vote safely.
Musa reassured stakeholders, including political parties, of the military’s neutrality during the electoral process, stating that security forces will be impartial to allow every eligible citizen the opportunity to participate without intimidation.
He disclosed that President Tinubu has ordered military forces to locate and rescue all individuals reported kidnapped or abducted nationwide, signifying a strong commitment to national safety. Additionally, the president plans to enhance aerial surveillance capabilities with the introduction of ten new aircraft and helicopters for the military, a move intended to reinforce security operations across the country.
The meeting also touched on the recent discussions around allegations of underage recruitment within the military, which Musa clarified as being unfounded. He accused terrorist groups of potentially using underage individuals, distancing the Nigerian military from such practices.
In closing, Musa reiterated the president’s commitment to security and urged all citizens to take an active role in maintaining safety, underscoring that public collaboration is essential in combating security challenges.
