The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has announced that two individuals in Yola, Adamawa, who were suspected of having contracted Ebola Virus Disease, have tested negative for the virus. This conclusion was reached after conducting two rounds of laboratory tests.
Dr. Jide Idris, the NCDC Director-General, made this information public in a statement on Saturday. He noted that the agency is collaborating with the Adamawa Government to thoroughly investigate the reported cases.
The suspected cases were reported to the Adamawa Public Health Emergency Operations Centre on the morning of October 30, following the identification of individuals showing symptoms consistent with Ebola. The individuals were promptly isolated, and samples were collected as part of the public health response.
Dr. Idris confirmed that the laboratory tests showed no evidence of Ebola, indicating that there are currently no laboratory-confirmed cases in Adamawa. He commended the proactive measures taken by the Adamawa Commissioner for Health and his team, affirming that the NCDC will continue to lend technical assistance to enhance the state’s public health response.
He further clarified that there is still only one ongoing laboratory-confirmed case of Ebola in Nigeria, located in the Federal Capital Territory. Dr. Idris called on citizens to remain calm and advised against the circulation of unverified information, urging the public to depend on official communication channels from government and health authorities.
The NCDC director emphasized the seriousness of Ebola as an infectious disease, highlighting the necessity for early detection, clinical management, and effective control measures to prevent its spread. He encouraged anyone exhibiting symptoms such as fever, severe weakness, or unexplained bleeding to seek medical attention promptly and to inform health workers of any relevant travel or contact history.
Dr. Idris urged individuals against self-medication and advised them to heed the guidance provided by health professionals and public health officials. He reassured the public that the NCDC, alongside the Adamawa Government and pertinent stakeholders, will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as accurate information becomes available, reaffirming their commitment to safeguarding public health through coordinated efforts, detection, and intervention.
