Aishah Ahmad, founder of the Bridgforte Centre for Global Impact, recently discussed the evolving landscape of digital finance and Africa’s vital role in shaping global financial governance. Ahmad, who previously served as the Deputy Governor for Financial System Stability at the Central Bank of Nigeria, highlighted that the challenge lies not only in access to financial services but also in fostering trust.
During a conversation with Nume Ekeghe, Ahmad outlined that while access to digital finance has grown significantly, public confidence in these systems remains a critical issue. She noted that many people hesitate to deposit savings or utilize digital payments due to security concerns.
According to Ahmad, the financial system must prioritize understanding what happens after users access services. She introduced a framework known as the Trust Architecture, which includes elements such as infrastructure integrity, institutional accountability, and cultural confidence. These factors are essential for fostering trust and ensuring that customers feel secure in their transactions.
Ahmad stressed that Africa’s financial innovations, such as mobile banking and shared payment infrastructures, have much to contribute to global discussions. She argued that Africa should be involved in creating the financial rules that govern global markets rather than merely following them.
Looking ahead, Ahmad believes that for Nigeria’s financial system to gain more public trust within the next five years, there should be tangible improvements in how financial issues are resolved, real-time user confidence in using financial services, and greater inclusivity for underserved populations.
Furthermore, she addressed the importance of women’s representation in leadership roles within the financial sector, emphasizing that having women in key positions should come with authoritative power over decision-making processes, particularly concerning economic opportunities.
Ahmad’s insights reflect a commitment to not only recognize Africa’s challenges but also to leverage its unique experiences and knowledge to influence the future of global finance.
